## Verified facts

Anna Maria Island, a seven-mile barrier island in Manatee County on Florida's Gulf coast, comprising the cities of Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach, reached from the mainland by the Anna Maria Island Bridge on Manatee Avenue (State Road 64) and the Cortez Bridge. Dolphin trips work the waters on both sides of the island: the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the sheltered flats of Anna Maria Sound, Sarasota Bay and the Manatee River to the east. Boats leave from Kingfish Boat Ramp at the island end of the Manatee Avenue causeway, from the Holmes Beach boat ramp, and from Waterline Villas and Marina in Holmes Beach. Kayak and paddleboard trips launch from the Bradenton mainland, including Sunny Shores Park at 11704 36th Avenue West. The sandbar trip runs to Jewfish Key, a small private island off the north end of Longboat Key.

Book a boat when you want the odds improved rather than left to chance: a captain who works these flats daily knows where the resident animals were feeding this morning, and two hours moving through the bay covers water you cannot reach on foot. Book a kayak instead if being at eye level matters more to you than covering distance, and a private charter only if the group and the timing are the point - remembering the captain's fee is extra.
